1831: Faraday discovered the mutual inductance law. according to the law there is mutual relations between electricity and magnetic fields. in other words, electrical energy can produce magnetic fields and magnetic fields can also create electrical energy.

1896: DR Sonual set of magnetic coils on the head of one of his disciples. they saw auras and suffered dizziness and lethargy.

1902: Researchers in Vienna, treated a depressed patients by placing an electromagnetic coil which could cause vibrations in his skull. this research is considered a primitive form of what is used in RTMS today . The magnetic fields have not strong intensity or frequency.

1965: The first magnetic stimulation of the human nerve done. by Bic Ford and Forming .

Mid-1980s: Anthony Barker at the University of Sheffield in England Constructed the first  TMS's modern and effective devices. This tool was designed as a diagnostic nerve tool, with this tool, researchers were able to put winding up on points that controls the hands and feet, they have to move them. it also was used to study the nerve fibers and create a functional map of the brain. painless and non-invasive nature of this method allowed the researchers to examine different areas of the brain that realize the study of memory, visual system and muscle control.

1990: The first TMS ‘s study was conducted in depression. Haflich et al found that TMS can create anti-depressant effects on the central area of head . the first application of TMS in the diagnostic purposes done for MS and motor neuron disorders .

2002: rTMS was approved by Health Canada for medical purposes.

So far: rTMS studies are doing over 20 years in the world . recently rTMS is used to evaluate the sensory components and understanding cortical processing . Current studies suggest that rTMS could be a valuable tool for many disorders besides depression, because due to its unique capabilities can selectively inhibit or stimulate the different parts of the brain. The emergence of this technology is a very important example of the invention in the field of mental nerve within 50 years .

Magnetic stimulation Brain (rTMS) is a technique in which electrical activity in the brain is influenced by magnetic fields. magnetic field through the current pulses generated by a coil, passes the head. This coil with plastic procedure directly placed on the scalp and through this magnetic field can stimulate specific areas of the cerebral cortex. The magnetic field generated by rTMS  Passes through the skin and skull ,painless and completely safe and cause a current through the nerve cells in the brain. because magnetic fields are provided on a regular intervals, called repetitive TMS or rTMS. Areas of the brain that are stimulated by rTMS for each disorder is explained below.


In this treatment, many of the rTMS’s components as "stimulation parameters" can be changed. Alterability of these parameters has made this method as a therapeutic tool invaluable. Stimulation parameters include:

  • Number of stimulations
  • Stimulation intensity
  • Frequency stimulation (high versus low frequency)
  • Duration the interval between stimulation
  • Irritable areas in the brain in the sense that rTMS may apply specifically for each patient.
